On a Gold Platter

You have all seen how metal has made its way to your footwear not only for structure but for aesthetic purposes as well. From season to season, designers have come up with ingenious measures to incorporate this gleaming element into women’s favorite accessory; hence, the creation of metallic shoes, metal-capped toes, and metal heels.  However, this post is not about the advent of style pieces that looked like they were taken straight from a sci-fi flick.

On the contrary, you’ll be meeting an anthology of sophisticated but edgy shoes and no other label exemplifies that better than Yves Saint Laurent. During the YSL Spring 2012 collection, it was Stefano Pilati’s heavy metal-plated shoes that stole the show. From platform to heels, these pairs were littered with the opulence of gold.

Heeled loafers were all the rage for a couple of seasons now and YSL wasn’t one to be left behind. However, the French label steps ahead of the competition by adding a twist: a gold shield right smack on the shoe vamp. This pair turns any lady into a style warrior as suede is beautifully juxtaposed with brass. You can fill up your artillery unit with over four color editions (black, pink, sea-foam green and Phthalo green) and even a snakeskin version.

These loafers would look fab with your trenchcoat and can break the monotony of power suits.

The YSL shoes collection has quite a number of metal-capped pieces, all with a distinctive character. The most basic of these is the suede slingback with square toes. You can opt for the full metal cap or brass strips for your toes. The latter are also highlighted in a T-strap model.

Platform slingbacks also glistened at the runway with square toecaps and killer heels. This line showcases chunky, sky high heels with mesh and lace covering. And as if all these weren’t grabbing enough attention, its thick platforms come in either suede or mirror to give an illusion of being suspended in mid-air. This pair is surely not for the faint of heart.

Among all the YSL shoes in this collection, this one in particular screams “extravagant”; the type you’d want to wear with a satin dress at a posh dinner party. Apart from the brass shield covering the entire vamp and metal-capped toes, it is encrusted with more than a dozen of jewels. These details plus the satin upper definitely put the icing on the cake.

The entire set features crisscross ankle straps which are particularly helpful when wearing the platform slingbacks. If you do not dig high heels, YSL is thoughtful enough to include kitten heels in the spring collection.
